The Hawks could be without Teague against Rondo and the controversial Mavericks

The Hawks could be without Teague against Rondo and the controversial Mavericks

The Atlanta Hawks will go for their their first season sweep of the Dallas Mavericks in 11 years. Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer's ball-sharing, pass-happy offense has the Hawks soaring to a 7½-game lead over the Raptors atop the Eastern Conference, while the Mavs are dealing with some chemistry issues despite winning nine of 12 games and three straight after last night's 99-92 victory over the Raptors.

Dallas' harmony was broken when head coach Rick Carlisle and Rajon Rondo exchanged words during a timeout in the third quarter last night. Rondo was never inserted back into the game but Carlisle said that he would be the starting point guard against the Hawks because "that's what we brought him here for." Rondo had 13 points, 11 assists and three steals against the Hawks on December 22, his second game with the Mavericks since being acquired from the Celtics but Dallas lost that game 105-102. Monta Ellis, who had a team-high 18 points in that loss, has totaled 43 points in the last two games after combining for 26 over the previous four.

Atlanta hasn't lost more than two straight games, but they're trying to get back on track after a midseason funk that followed a team-record, 19-game winning streak. The Hawks have lost four of seven, including an ugly 105-80 setback to the Raptors on Friday, but they bounced back with a 97-86 win at Milwaukee last Sunday. Their balance has made the Hawks a very dangerous team, as five players average at least 11.8 points with Paul Millsap leading the way at 16.9.

As far as this game is concerned, Jeff Teague is questionable due to an illness, which could potentially leave the Hawks without their second-leading scorer (16.8 points per game) and assists leader (7.3). Dennis Schroder filled in for Teague and stepped up his game by scoring a career-high 22 points in the first meeting against the Mavericks. Now Schroder could replace Teague again as the Hawks try to sweep the season series with the Mavericks for the first time since 2003-04.

Will George Hill's return help the Pacers beat the Warriors?

Will George Hill's return help the Pacers beat the Warriors?

By Mike Neri

The Warriors will begin their longest road trip of the season as they look to sweep the Pacers for the first time since 2000-01. Getting out in transition was the difference in their first meeting against Pacers, who hope that having George Hill, even at less than full strength, can help them counter the Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors lead the league in points per game (110.6), average fast-break points (21.3) and average points off turnovers (20.0), while the Indiana Pacers lag considerably behind in those categories, averaging 96.0 points, 9.5 on fast-breaks and 14.2 off turnovers. Golden State also limits opponents to 42.2 percent shooting.

The first meeting between these two teams was tied at halftime before the Warriors pulled away for a 117-102 win on January 7. Golden State enjoyed advantages of 28-11 in fast-break points and 22-7 in points off turnovers. Klay Thompson's play late in the game was vital, as he scored 27 of his 40 points in the second half, helping the Warriors open the third quarter on a 14-1 run.

Indiana will be a better team if George Hill and Roy Hibbert are on the court together. Hill, who is averaging 13.6 points this season, missed the first meeting with a strained left groin while Hibbert was limited to 5:39 minutes of play after landing awkwardly while going for a rebound.

Hill has seen limited minutes recently. He made 2 of 8 shots for seven points in Friday's 106-95 win at Philadelphia but there's another injury concern for them with Rodney Stuckey, who scored a season-high 30 points before leaving with a left ankle injury.

The Pacers have won five of their last six games to move within range of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference while the Warriors begin a six-game road trip against Eastern Conference opponents with an NBA-best 16-2 record against them.

Stephen Curry led the way with 25 points and 11 assists and Klay Thompson added 20 points as the Warriors won their fourth straight game, 110-99 over the Spurs on Friday.

Indiana is 7-17 against Western Conference opponents, but Golden State won't take anything for granted, as they have dropped 11 of their last 13 games in Indiana, where they won 98-96 on March 4 after Klay Thompson's winning jumper over George Hill with 0.6 seconds left in the game.

Did these NFL teams address their needs?

Did these NFL teams address their needs?

During the NFL offseason, I will be conducting an analysis to see if each NFL team across the NFL addressed their most dire needs. These needs come from the statistical website of ProFootballFocus.com. Pro Football Focus looks at every player on every play and determines with a grading system if that player did his job correctly. If a player did his job well, he may receive a positive score (up to +2 in increments of 0.5), and if he didn't do well, he will receive a negative score (to -2 in increments of .05).

While there is some "judgment" to this method, generally this process can determine if stats are telling the truth or not. For example, ILB London Fletcher of the Washington Redskins had 139 total tackles last year, but he had the worst Pro Football Focus rating on the Redskins defense in 2012. This shows the box score doesn't tell the whole story.

Each player on offense is graded on their job in the passing and running game on offense, and each player on defense is graded on their job in the pass rush, run defense, or pass coverage. Obviously a defensive tackle will rarely contribute ratings to the pass coverage category. Now without further ado, here are the worst ratings of each AFC East team and what they did to fix them.

Buffalo Bills
Worst Ratings: Passing game and Rush Defense

The Bills had a pretty below average passing game last year with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick at the helm. Fitzpatrick put up some lofty stats at times, but ultimately threw too many interceptions and didn't win enough games. Also, behind WR Stevie Johnson and TE Scott Chandler, no receivers did much of anything to contribute to the passing game. This offseason, the Bills got rid of Fitzpatrick and grabbed QB Kevin Kolb from the Cardinals. They also drafted QB EJ Manuel in the first round. As far as receivers go, they drafted two receivers in USC's Robert Woods and speedster Marquise Goodwin from Texas to help out Johnson.

The other area that the Bills struggled in last year was against the run. The Bills are switching to the 3-4 under new head coach Doug Marrone and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. The former first round pick Marcell Dareus did a great job at getting after the quarterback in 2012, but failed to create anything against the running game. The Bills may have addressed it by taking ILB Kiko Alonso out of Oregon in the second round in this year's draft. They also traded their worst defensive player against the run, LB Kelvin Sheppard, to the Colts for OLB Jerry Hughes. We'll see if these moves pay off.

Miami Dolphins
Worst Ratings: Rush Offense and Run Blocking

When talking about the rush offense, we're talking about the running backs, receivers, and quarterbacks who attributed to running the football for yards, disregarding blocking. Last year, the Miami HBs (Reggie Bush, Daniel Thomas, Lamar Miller) didn't have great years. The Dolphins addressed this in the draft (some thought it was too late) by taking Mike Gillislee in the 5th round. Miami lost Bush in free agency to the Lions, so it will be interesting who wins the job for them at HB this year.

The other flaw of the Dolphins was their run blocking. Miami lost LT Jake Long to the Rams this year, and they didn't do much in the draft to help this unit. They drafted LT Dallas Thomas out of Tennessee in the third round, but he will most likely turn into a reserve guard at the start of 2013. The Dolphins are still hoping to get LT Branden Albert or some other player to help out at the tackle spot. Jonathan Martin had a subpar year in 2012, but is hoping to play better as he will probably be the starter at left tackle this year.

New England Patriots
Worst Ratings: Pass Rush and Rush Offense

The Patriots have a brand new passing offense with Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, and Josh Boyce, but last year they seemed to be inefficient in getting after the opposing QB. Most of their defensive lineman were not considered pass rushers, although last year's first round pick, DE Chandler Jones, did a good job at doing it. The Patriots grabbed Jamie Collins in the second round of this year's draft, and he will probably be a 3rd down pass rusher the other DE spot in their 4-3 hybrid defense. They also got DT Tommy Kelly from Oakland, who has been known for his ability to get to the quarterback.

The Patriots really didn't have another low rating, but their second lowest one came from their rush offense. The Pats didn't feel like they needed to address their running game, so they kept Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen as their two starters. Danny Woodhead was sent to the Broncos.

New York Jets
Worst Ratings: Pass Rush and Passing Game

The Jets definitely addressed their need of pass rush by taking the pass rushing DT Sheldon Richardson with their second pick in the first round. If the Jets can move either Muhammed Wilkerson or Richardson to the one technique at nose tackle, the Jets' defensive line would be stacked with pass rushers. The problem is the Jets' linebackers haven't been great at rushing the pass. Rex Ryan's defense usually involves more complex coverage rather than blitzing, but a solid pass rusher from the outside couldn't have hurt.

To say the Jets' passing game was bad seems like an obvious statement considering how poorly QB Mark Sanchez played last year. But many of Sanchez's receivers didn't help him out either. The Jets took QB Geno Smith in the second round, and with David Garrad recently leaving New York, Smith seems like the front-runner to take the starting job. Smith was the lightning rod of the draft, and we will see if he can save Ryan's job, which reportedly is on the hot seat.

Analysis and Projection of the Philadelphia Eagles

Analysis and Projection of the Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles came into the 2012 season with high hopes (remember
Mike Vick's Super Bowl comment?). However, the death of Andy Reid's son Garret
back in August turned out to be the start of a nightmarish year. The Eagles
now are 3-7 and may need to win the next six games in order to get back into
playoff contention. Reports this week say Reid is unlikely to resign with the
organization, and the Eagles might get rid of him before the season ends. If
the Birds lose their next game against the woeful Panthers in Philly, they should
scrap this season and prepare for the next as soon as possible. That could mean
firing Reid the day after.

I believe the Eagles need to do away with their two "leaders" by
next season. Who are these leaders? Reid and Vick. Ever since Vick's remarkable
comeback season in 2010, his numbers have been average at best. Vick had 19
TDs last season compared to his 18 TOs. This season, he has 12 TDs and 14 TOs.
He has yet to play in all 16 games since he came back into the league in 2009.
Vick is one of NFL's most exciting players, but this show needs to come to a
close soon. He's been criticized of holding the ball too long and forcing unintelligent
throws. With all the talent they have across the field, Philadelphia has to
try something else. The Reid/Vick era needs to end once and for all.

So if Vick leaves, what happens to QB Nick Foles? The NFL is dominated by QBs
nowadays. If you don't have a stout QB (or an excellent game manager like Alex
Smith), your team will not be contending for the Super Bowl. After watching
his preseason performances and last two games, I'm not sure Foles can be a great
QB or game manager. He seems to lack presence and is almost as turnover-prone
as Vick. Last week he had three fumbles to go with his two INTs, but the Eagles
were able to get every lose fumble back. If I'm running the Eagles' organization,
I'd like to keep Foles as my backup and find a stellar QB to replace him. Philadelphia
is an attractive place for free agents and players around the league because
of all the young talent on both sides of the ball. It is also possible that
the Eagles could possibly pack it in and try to nab a top pick in the draft
for that QB.

I feel like if the Eagles get a solid coach and QB they will be back in the
driver seat of the NFC East. They have the key offensive weapons in stud RB
LeSean McCoy and WRs Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson. They have the talent
on defense as they rank 12th in yards given up. This team should not be 3-7
right now. Something's got to change. Maybe there needs to be a change of "leaders".

FIVE ROOKIE QB'S TO START

There's a new record in the NFL this season: 5 rookie NFL quarterbacks will
start the opening week of the 2012 year. Some people say they're all locks to
be great NFL players. I will take a look at each of them and give my opinion
on their futures as NFL QBs. In parenthesis are the preseason stats this year.

Andrew Luck, No. 1 pick, Indianapolis Colts (522 yds, 3 TDs, 2 INTs, 62.1% CMP
in four games):
I have a feeling Luck will be the best quarterback from this draft someday.
That's not just because he was the number one overall pick, but his athleticism,
accuracy, and leadership all point for him being a star in the league. When
I was watching him against the Pittsburgh Steelers, I saw him toss two pretty
poorly thrown balls for interceptions, but those didn't stop him from scoring
on three different drives. In fact, after he threw his interception that went
back for a score, Luck took the Colts all the way down the field and scored
on a bold run into the end zone. He slid, but nevertheless, took a shot as he
was going down. I see high intangibles for Luck, and his athleticism will be
a big plus in the NFL. Will he be as good as Peyton Manning? Probably not, but
there's a lot to like from this kid's play. Indianapolis should be fighting
for playoff spots in the next couple years or so.

Robert Griffin III, No. 2 pick, Washington Redskins (193 yds, 2 TDs, 0 INTs,
64.5% CMP in three games):
Robert Griffin didn't show that much in the preseason except that he is more
accurate than I remembered. He throws the ball strangely, kind of like Vince
Young, except his arm strength is much better. Many people are hyping RGIII
up because of what Cam Newton did last year. The problem is that other than
being QBs who can run and throw well, they aren't much of the same. RGIII is
about 3-4 inches shorter and 25 lbs less than Newton. Don't get me wrong, RGIII
is a tough guy, but he won't be putting up 14 rushing touchdowns without Newton's
gigantic size. I believe the difference between Luck and RGIII is that RGIII
has more potential to be great, but the way he plays (running and throwing)
the way he throws his wonky passes can also result in an injury or bust. However,
I think RGIII will have a great career in the NFL. Look for him to make a few
pro bowls down the line.

Ryan Tannehill, No. 8 pick, Miami Dolphins (414 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 52.6% CMP
in four games):
The 8th pick of the draft is the wild card of these quarterbacks. I will admit,
I'm not the biggest supporter of Tannehill because he was way overvalued in
this year's draft, and he's only played quarterback for two years. Why did Tannehill
all of a sudden go from mid-round pick to top ten pick? Did scouts look and
say, "Oh, wait, he actually did really well for the Aggies?" In his
defense, he did play pretty well last year, throwing for almost 30 TDs and over
3500 yards. The stat that jumps out at me is his 15 picks. In the Big 12 where
great defense is a rarity, Tannehill's 15 INTs don't look too appetizing. He's
a great athlete, but I think his decision making and the situation in Miami
(who is he throwing the ball to?) can lead to an early career exit from South
Beach. The good thing is he is still raw, and maybe a few years down, he can
evolve into a consistent starting NFL quarterback.

Brandon Weeden, No. 22 pick, Cleveland Browns (297 yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 49.0%
CMP in three games):
The Browns took a risk and snagged Brandon Weeden earlier than he was projected
to go for the 22nd pick of the draft. Weeden doesn't have much potential left,
but does he need it? The Browns drafted a guy who's already in his prime. Smart
move? Eh, we'll see. I think Weeden can have success in the NFL, he did have
good accuracy at Oklahoma State last year (72%), but he was also throwing a
lot of his balls to the best receiver in the draft, Justin Blackmon. The problem
with Weeden is he reminds me of an older Browns' QB named Derek Anderson. I
didn't get to watch Anderson that much, but he, like Weeden, had zero touch
on the ball when I watched him. He and Weeden are practically immobile when
running, which is interesting considering Weeden is in a West Coast offense.
Did Derek Anderson have some good years? Absolutely. In 2007, He threw for 29
TDs for Cleveland. I just don't see an all-star brewing in Cleveland with Weeden.
He will be reliable, but I'm not seeing a Pro Bowl quarterback.
Russell Wilson, No. 75, Seattle Seahawks (536 yds, 5 TDs, 1 INT, 63.5% CMP in
four games):

And finally we get to the little man, 5'11" Russell Wilson. I'm a big
fan of the new starter for the Seahawks when it comes to accuracy and getting
the job done. He had major success at Wisconsin and NC State, and I think he
can create excitement this year. I think he will definitely struggle because
he played in some garbage time in the preseason (other than his last two games),
but he will put up points whether it's throwing or running the ball. I'm a fan
that Wilson doesn't throw many picks, too. Last year, he passed for 33 TDs on
only 4 INTs. That's incredible, even if you are in an offense that runs a lot
and sets up for the pass. I do have a gut feeling that Matt Flynn may end up
taking the starting job back because Flynn is the one making the big bucks,
but overall, Wilson will see time in the NFL as a starter or a solid back up
for many years.

2012 BIG 10 PREVIEW

College football season is back and it is time to start previewing teams and
making predictions on who will end up being on top of their conferences by the
end of the season. Overall, the Big 10 posted a mediocre record in their bowl
games at 4-6. In this article, I will take a look at the Big 10 conference and
give you my picks or predictions for this upcoming season.

Leaders Division:
Wisconsin: The reigning champs of the Big 10 are back as the heavy favorites
this year. Montee Ball decided to stay in school another year, and Danny O'Brien,
the QB transfer from Maryland, is projected as the starter. There are always
a lot of things to like about Wisconsin over the years. They always have one
of the best offensive lines in the country, and they seem to have a strong defense
every year. The line doesn't have as much experience as it has in the past,
but that shouldn't be much of a problem. O'Brien will provide a solid substitute
for the extremely productive Russell Wilson, but the production of the offense
will mostly focus on Ball, who averaged an outstanding 6.2 YPC last year and
had 33 TDs. I like Wisconsin to win the Leaders division again this year.

Ohio State: Ohio State is the team that I feel will finish 2nd in the Leaders
division this year. In is Urban Meyer and expectations are high this year. I
honestly don't think the Buckeyes will do badly this year, but they won't have
as great of a year as some experts are thinking. Braxton Miller is a great athlete,
but his arm is questionable. There is not much depth at the receiver or running
back position either. Defense will be OSU's strong point this year with 10 returning
starters. Look for the Buckeyes to be exciting with Urban Meyer's new scheme,
but this project is still a work in progress. I expect around four losses for
the Buckeyes; however, there will be big things from them in the future.

Illinois: Illinois will finish 3rd in the Big 10 leaders division this
year. The Illini have 15 returning starters on both sides of the ball, including
their junior quarterback Nate Scheelhaase. The Illini also have a new head coach,
former Toledo coach, Tim Beckman, who replaces Ron Zook. Beckman will bring
in the familiar spread offense that Zook ran for the past couple years with
Scheelhaase and Juice Williams. The Illini should be poised for a successful
year compared to ones in the past. If you remember last year, they started off
the year with six straight wins. Problem was the competition in the Big 10 was
tough, and they went on to lose their next six before winning their bowl game.
I'm not sure that Illinois will be as good as Ohio State, but if Scheelhaase
can stay an extra year under Beckman, look for Illinois to contend next year.
However, this year, the Illinois will finish right behind the Buckeyes in the
Leaders division.

Penn State: Next on the list is poor Penn State. Even with tailback Silas
Redd gone, I think the Nittany Lions will hold their own in the Leaders division.
Yes, they will finish at the bottom half of the division behind the Fighting
Illini, but this won't be such a disappointing year for Penn State. In fact,
I think they can pull off a big upset against Wisconsin, Nebraska, or Ohio State,
similar to what the Buckeyes did last year did to Wisconsin on their homecoming
game. The Nittany Lions will be bottom feeders in the Big 10 for a long time,
but with experienced QB Matt McGloin still playing in State College, Penn State
has a shimmer of hope for a decent season in the wake of the rulings from the
NCAA.

Purdue: For finishing 5th this year, Purdue doesn't look that bad on
paper. In fact, their running game was solid last year, averaging over 180 yards
a game, and senior QB Caleb TerBush had a decent end to the 2011 year. However,
they had a shaky defense, and their secondary is awfully inexperienced. Other
than Notre Dame, they should be able to win their non-conference games easily;
but when Purdue comes to face Big 10 competition, I'm not sure if they can handle
it. Look for them to only win maybe two or three conference games this year.

Minnesota: The Gophers come into 2012 with 13 returning starters, including
the dynamic QB MarQueis Gray, who passed for almost 1500 yards and ran for almost
1000 in 2011. Jerry Kill also returns for his second year as the head coach.
However, there is not much depth at any other position. I'm not sure Minnesota
can come close to making any type of run this year. Look for them to finish
with two or three wins, maybe stealing a win in the Big 10. They'll more than
likely finish at the bottom of the Leaders division.

Legends Division:
Michigan State: Atop of the Legends division will be the Spartans of
East Lansing. They have probably the best defense in the Big 10 this year. Led
by Denicos Allen, who recorded 11 sacks last year, the Spartans have 8 returning
starters on that side of the ball. The questions will come on the offensive
side of the ball now that Kirk Cousins, BJ Cunningham, and Keshawn Martin are
playing professionally. Will RB Le'Veon Bell be able to carry the load for the
offense now that QB Andrew Maxwell is in, who only played five games of garbage
minutes last year? I think they will be successful. Michigan State used to always
be like this: ground and pound to open up the pass and play great defense. Last
year, in which they mostly ran a passing/spread type of offense, which was an
exception because of Cousins' experienced play. I like Michigan State getting
back to the basics and running the ball more this year. They will be back in
Indianapolis.

Nebraska: Nebraska has always been an interesting team with Taylor Martinez
at the helm of their offense. He runs well, but watching him throw is like watching
an old lady cross the street. It tends to be frightening. With that said, I
feel like he and RB Rex Burkhead will have great years running the ball. They
have a year under their belt playing in the Big 10 now, and look for them to
start playing well in this conference. Their defense was questionable at times
last year after they lost their star corner Prince Amukamara to the NFL Draft,
but I feel like they will turn it around this year. This may sound like an excuse,
but they needed a year to get used to the teams of the Big 10, and the style
of play. I feel like the Cornhuskers will finish 2nd in this division, just
above the Wolverines.

Michigan: I feel that going into this year that Michigan is overhyped.
I think they will still have a decent team, but they had so many wins last year
by only a few points that could've swung in either direction. Denard Robinson
might be the fastest quarterback in the NCAA (that's close between him and Braxton
Miller), but his production will falter a little bit earlier in the season with
RB Fitz Toussaint suspended. Toussaint will provide a good option when he comes
back, though. I'm just not big on Robinson being paired with Brady Hoke. Hoke
loves the pro-style offense and Robinson is anything but a pro-style quarterback.
The clash reminds me a little bit of Tim Tebow and John Elway last year. I just
see a decent year for the Wolverines: nothing spectacular, but nothing bad.
They'll finish 3rd in the Legends division.
Iowa: Look for the Hawkeyes and their new way of moving the ball this year when
the team hired Texas' former offensive coordinator Greg Davis, who believed
in a more passing/spread offense. That should help out Iowa, who in the past
have always been a pro-style, running team. Gone is RB Marcus Coker, who produced
over 1,300 yards last year, but returning is the productive QB James Vandenburg.
Vandenburg had a great year in 2011 as he passed for over 3,000 yards and 25
TDs. The defense, starting with the linebackers, should be solid as usual. If
I'm Iowa, I'd expect a fun year with a lot of passing, but unfortunately the
talent isn't good enough to hang with the contenders. They will finish 4th.

Northwestern: The Wildcats are not far from making a run in the Big 10,
but it more than likely won't happen this upcoming year. The do-it-all senior
QB Kain Coulter, who ran, caught, and passed last year will line up as the starter
this year, replacing the shaky Dan Persa. Coulter is an exciting player; he
reminds me of a Taylor Martinez type, but with a better arm. Coulter will ignite
the Northwestern offense, but the defense will probably be the thing that hinders
the Wildcats the most. Too many newcomers for Pat Fitzgerald will land Northwestern
in the bottom of the Big 10 again.

Indiana: Kevin Wilson had a rough year in 2011 in Bloomington, and it
looks like it will be tough again in 2012. The Hoosiers finally have their quarterback:
super athlete sophomore Tre Roberson, who seems to fit the Denard Robinson,
Braxton Miller, Taylor Martinez, and Kain Coulter mold. Roberson doesn't have
the greatest arm, but he makes up for it for his quick feet. That's pretty much
all the talent the Hoosiers have this year. I wouldn't expect much from them
for a few years. They'll finish 6th.

Indianapolis: Wisconsin vs. Michigan St.
Wisconsin will win its 3rd Big 10 title in a row and head to the Rose Bowl once
again.
