Quest for Perfection; Part 2!

We’re down to five! After Rutgers defeated South Florida 30-27 last Thursday the list of undefeated teams has shrunk to five: Arizona State, Boston College, Hawaii, Kansas, and Ohio State. Will any of the five remaining drop out of the quest for perfection this weekend? Let’s take a look.

Arizona State

After a 44-20 pounding of Washington the Sun Devils took their 7-0 record into the bye week and began preparation for their toughest stretch of the season. With #18 Cal, #5 Oregon, UCLA and #9 USC still on their schedule perfection will be unobtainable.

Boston College

Although they are the #2 team I the country I still don’t believe. The Eagles have only one win against a top-20 opponent this season. If BC survives Virginia Tech this week, which I doubt, they wrap up their season against Florida State, Maryland, Clemson and Miami (FL); all looking for signature wins this season.

Hawaii

Colt Brennan is for real, and the Warriors rack-up points at a 52.14 clip per game. The Warriors accomplishments lose a little shine when you realize their first seven opponents have a combined 10-32 record. With Fresno State, Boise State, and Washington as well as Nevada and New Mexico State on tap their chances of remaining undefeated are slim.

Kansas

The Jayhawks continue to surprise. I thought Colorado would get the best of them last week but they showed what they are made of holding on for a tough 19-14 win. I still don’t believe they will survive their remaining schedule and feel they will most likely go down this week against Texas A&M.

Ohio State

One minute of sloppy play almost cost Ohio State their perfect season. In one 60 second span against Michigan State the Buckeyes saw an interception and a fumble returned for touchdowns. Even with their mental lapses they were able to hold off the Spartans and remain perfect. Sloppy play like that against any of their remaining opponents; #24 Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois or #19 Michigan could mean the end of their perfect run.

With undefeated teams dropping every week the chances of a one loss or even a two loss team playing for the title becomes more realistic. Hang on LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, South Florida, and USC your not out of it yet. Even the 5-2 Gators are still alive. This is going to get good!
