0-2 after 2,

So Where Are They Now?

Nick Parsons

After Week 2 in the National Football League there were ten teams sitting at 0-2, with five being what I considered ‘elite’ squads (Jets, Eagles, Giants, Saints and Rams). So what have these five teams done since then, and what’s the outlook for them for the rest of the season? Let’s break each team down and find out what’s going on:

The Jets (1-5)

Week 7 Matchup: New York Jets @ Cincinnati Bengals -6

In Week 1 the Jets took a “nose-dive”, losing 38-14 (both “straight-up” and “against the spread”) to the Patriots in what has now been dubbed “Video-Gate”. In Week 2 they managed to cover the spread, but lost a tough one on the road in Baltimore, 20-13. In Week 3 they managed their only win of the season against still winless Miami, but failed to cover the spread in that game. New York then reeled off three straight losses (failing to cover the spread in each instance) to Buffalo, the Giants and Philadelphia. Nine of the Jets remaining 12 games come against teams who currently have winning records; suffice it to say, this team has been “grounded”.

The Eagles (2-3)

Week 7 Matchup: Chicago Bears @ Philadelphia Eagles –5

Philly lost both opening games ‘SU’ and ‘ATS’; Week 1 they lost in Green Bay, 16-13, and in Week 2 they blew it at home to the Redskins on Monday night, 20-12. However in Week 3, I released my NFL “Bounce Back Game of the Year” on the Eagles as they went up against the then 2-0 Detroit Lions; Philadelphia won in blowout fashion 56-21. The Eagles followed up that gem with a lackluster effort against the Giants, losing 16-3, then enjoyed their bye-week. They won a low-scoring affair (16-9) vs. the Jets in Week 6. Putting points on the board is still a major concern for this team, and the next four games will make or break their season. (Bears, Vikings, Cowboys and Red Skins)

The Giants (4-2)

Week 7 Matchup: San Francisco 49’ers @ New York Giants –9

New York lost to Dallas in Week 1 in a shoot-out, 45-35, and then a heartbreaker at home to the resurgent Pack, 35-13 in Week 2. The Giants have responded well since dropping the first two, banging off four ‘straight-up’ and ‘against the spread’ victories. This team has come together on both sides of the ball and Eli Manning is finally living up to his potential. The Giants have the 49’ers coming to town in Week 7 and then are on the road to take on the Dolphins in Week 8. New York should be sitting at 6-2 heading into their bye-week.

The Saints (1-4)

Week 7 Matchup: Atlanta Falcons @ New Orleans Saints –9

Arguably the biggest letdown so far this season, the Saints went both 0-2 ‘SU’ and ‘ATS’ in their first two games, losing to the Colts on opening night, and a ‘shocker’ in Tampa Bay in Week 2. The Titans smoked the Saints in Week 3, 31-14, and in Week 4 they tried to recuperate with their bye-week. They promptly lost their next game at home to the Panthers but followed that up last weekend with a dominating win on the road in Seattle (28-17). New Orleans seemed to turn a corner last week and finally looked like the top offensive team that they were a year ago. They have a long way to climb, but the next five games are all winnable (Falcons, 49’ers, Jaguars, Rams, Texans).

The Rams (0-6)

Week 7 Matchup: St. Louis Rams @ Seattle Seahawks –9

Rams fans would argue that their team is the biggest disappointment in the entire NFL; few would disagree. The Rams have sustained significant injuries to players on both sides of the ball, and have opened the 2007 season 0-6, failing to even cover the hefty spreads they’ve been given all but once. This team has done nothing, is going nowhere, and will be the ‘red-headed step child’ for the rest of the league to beat on for the remainder of the season.
