Big XII Preview - Triple Threat Sports

A while back we took a look at the SEC and now the focus shifts to the Big 12 Conference in what will be the final year of its existence in current form. The Big XII has been well represented in the BCS Title Game of late and there are a couple of teams that could make it three in a row. With that in mind, lets take a look at the 2010 Big 12 Outlook:

Big 12 South:

Projected Winner: Texas

Darkhorse: Texas A&M

Key Game: November 25th - Texas A&M at Texas

Texas was an injury to Colt McCoy away from winning the National Title last year, and even after he got hurt the Horns were in the hunt to win that game late until the Gilbert fumble. Yes, they lose some good players, but Mack Brown only recruits the best, and UT will be plenty fine in the talent department. They also have a CUPCAKE schedule, with the exception of the Red River Rivalry, a game at Nebraska (non division) and the season finale vs A&M. If they can beat the much improved Aggies - and no win is considered a sure thing in that rivalry game - they should win this division.

Speaking of A&M, they rate a STRONG +7.0 in our Plus/Minus rankings, and with the exception of Texas, could/should be favored in the remainder of their road games. The Aggies should start 4-0 before a trip to Arlington to play Missouri, then host Missouri and Texas Tech with a road game at Kansas in between those two. They host Oklahoma on November 6th, and a win there (we view that as a real possibility) would make that aforementioned season finale against the Longhorns very meaningful.

Before getting onto the Big 12 North, have to talk about Oklahoma a bit. Many think this team can compete for a National Title, but we have them at -0.5 in our Plus/Minus Ratings, and cannot see an team that we think is a little bit less talented than last year's 8-5 squad making such a big jump. OU should get back to double digit wins, but that appears to be the ceiling in this view.

Big 12 North:

Projected Winner: Nebraska

Darkhorse: Missouri

Key Game: October 30th, Missouri at Nebraska

In years past the Big Ten was known as the Big Two and Little Eight, and in this division it is the Big 2 and Forgotten Four. Only one team other than NU and MU finished with a winning record last year (quick trivia...it was Iowa State!) and the same could happen again. REALLY think Kansas is going to struggle, and while Colorado, Kansas State and ISU will not be bad, they are not in the same class as the top two teams. In that light "darkhorse" does not really fit the Tigers, but they are only team to have a shot at beating the Huskers in this division. We have (several) tickets on NU to win this division and will be surprised if we are not cashing them.

Back soon with the Big 10...Have a Great Day
