All Good Things Come In Three’s!

I know everyone is thinking about baseball and football, and so am I! But there have been some major happenings on (and off) the hard-court recently and I thought I’d get you caught up with what’s been going on in the city of Boston.

After a very disappointing season in 2006 in which they finished 24-58 (23 games back), the Boston Celtics refocused over the off-season, trading a large portion of their line up for a fresh and powerful new display of talent.

The Celt’s have acquired Ray Allen and the draft rights to Glen Davis from the Seattle Sonics in exchange for forward Wally Szczerbiak, guard Delonte West and the draft rights to Jeff Green.  They also sent out forwards Al Jefferson, Gerald Green and Ryan Gomes, guard Sebastian Telfair and center Theo Ratliff, along with two first-round draft picks and cash considerations in exchange for Superstar forward Kevin Garnett from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The last time there was this much ‘buzz’ involving a trade for Boston was when ‘Big Red’, Bill Walton, was traded to the Celtics back on Sept. 6th, 1985. Walton went on to play 80 games as a reserve and the Celtics went on to win their last of 16 titles.

The Celtics ruled the basketball world during the 80’s. Two-time ‘Sixth Man’ award winner, Kevin McHale, was drafted by Boston in 1980, and he, along with all star legends Larry Bird and Robert Parish combined for three NBA Championships.

Since then, Celtics fans have of course been suffering through more than a decade of depression and it is their hope that Allen, Garnett and Pierce can gel quickly into a cohesive and dominant force and bring back some glory to the parquet floor.

Let’s take a quick look at the Celtic’s ‘06/’07 campaign. Boston finished 41-39-2 ‘against the spread’ last year. They were a dismal 13-27-1 ATS at home and a surprising 28-12-1 ATS on the road.

The addition of Garnett and Allen will surely cause the Celtics to become a more popular pick with the betting public. It's highly doubtful that they'll be able to match last season's ATS record on the road; however, an improvement at home should be expected. While perusing a couple of sites on the Internet, I found the Celtics at +2050 to win the Championship, a significant drop from last year when they were given no chance at all.

At long last Boston is a team that will compete with the best in the East. With franchise all-star Paul Pierce, sharp shooter Ray Allen, and ex-NBA MVP Kevin Garnett, the Celtics will no doubt shake up the Eastern Conference as they set out to prove that good things do indeed come in three’s!
