New Mexico Bowl Wyoming vs. Fresno St. Wyoming is one of those fringe bowl teams having gone 6-6 but they played 2 undefeated teams with losses to Texas and TCU. They were pretty competitive every week because there defense is actually pretty good. As the season wound down they lost 22-10 and 10-0 to Utah and Air Force so you can see there defense is pretty solid. They'll need there defense to be real solid in this bowl game as Fresno has a very explosive offense led by Ryan Matthews. There QB Coburn improved as the season went along but Fresno has a suspect defense at best having allowed over 50 points to 3 teams this year, including 52 to Illinois in that wild closeout game. This is a game where if Wyoming can keep Matthews from busting a couple of big runs they'll have a chance at covering. I have this game as one of my bowl selections this year so check back on Saturday morning to start your bowl season with a BANG!!! St. Petersburg Bowl Central Florida vs. Rutgers This could be a very competitive bowl game as I don't think people are giving enough respect to UCF. The Golden Knights only lost 4 games and those games were at Texas, Southern Miss and East Carolina and at home to Miami. They played ECU and Southern Miss tight throughout and they hung around in Texas for a very long time. They also beat Houston and held them to 32 points which is pretty good for any defense. That is where this team excels is on the defensive side of the ball and they could create problems for a Rutgers team that makes mistakes. I doubt that the Rutgers Wildcat will bother UCF at all so this will be low scoring game and I see UCF with what is basically a home game winning late 20-17! New Orleans Bowl Middle Tennessee vs. Southern Miss Southern Miss is one of those teams that seems to go to a bowl every year and they have a guy who has put together one of the quietest great college careers ever. Damion Fletcher is only 63 yards away from being just the 9th running back in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards in all 4 of his seasons but even more amazing to me is he is less than 40 yards from passing Herschel Walker to become the 9th leading rusher in NCAA history. He'll get both of those although it won't be easy because MTSU is a very solid team. This team went 9-3 with losses at Clemson and Mississippi St and at Troy . They also won at Maryland and Memphis so they won't be afraid to win this game. Dwight Dasher is a duel threat at QB for the Blue Raiders having thrown for over 2,600 yard and rushing for just under 1,000 yards. He'll keep this game close but S. Miss will find a way to win 34-27! |
