In This Piece we will look at the current RPI Rankings for the top 100 NCAAB teams and points put some of the more interesting won loss records.
RPI Rankings:
The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. Created in 1981, the RPI is a tool used in selecting and seeding the 68 teams for the NCAA Men's basketball Division I tournament. RPI data includes games against Division I schools only
For Some interesting info regarding this scale we note that Kansas while ranked 2nd has played 19 teams ranked in the top 50 and has won 12 of those games, which will certainly help them in the tournaments. Arizona has the best top 50 overall record vs top 50 teams at 10-2, followed by Syracuse at 8-2 and Villanova which has a surprising 8-3 record vs top echelon teams and may turn some heads in post season action.
Looking at some of the more disappointing teams vs the top 50, we note that Gonzaga is just 1-4, Colorado is 3-7, Oregon checks in at 2-6 and Pittsburgh at 1-6 all vs top 50 ranked schools.
Moving down and looking at some of the more surprising records we start off a with a Louisville team that is actually under .500 this season vs top 50 teams after losing to Memphis on Saturday. Wichita St while 30-0 has won the only 3 times vs top 50 schools and has had the benefit of not having to play 2 games with Creighton this season since the Blue Jays have switched conference and stand at a respectable 6-3 themselves vs the elite teams. California and Tennessee have struggled going 3-9 and 3-7 vs top 50 RPI Teams. However no top 100 teams has been as inept as Maryland who is 0-9 this year. For our sleeper team which has quietly gone under the radar we see a U.Mass team sitting at number 13 and producing a 5-2 record, not bad for an A-10 Conference team. Below is the teams ranking followed by their record, their RPI Scale index and Strength of Schedule ranking and followed by their records vs top 50 and lower ranked teams.
