BCS Rankings Raise Questions

The first BCS Standings are out and it’s no surprise to anyone the Buckeyes of Ohio State are ranked number 1. They have played very good football and their schedule has included two tough games so far, at Texas and at Iowa. The Buckeyes certainly deserve to be ranked number one right now. As we all know the BCS rankings are not perfect and here is a look at a few question marks in the Top 10 and how they just might affect the games from here on out.

In But Shouldn’t Be: West Virginia & Louisville
We always here the sad story from the smaller conference teams that they get left out no matter how good their record is. Well the Mountaineers and Cardinals have been given their chance as they showed up at #5 and #7, respectively. Problem is that they have received more credit than they deserve as they really have not played anyone of substance yet. West Virginia’s six opponents to date have won a total of 14 games, an average of just over two wins per team! Not anything to write home about even if the wins have been by a large margin. Louisville sits in the same boat as their only win to speak of has come against Miami and, as we all know, this is nowhere near the quality of Miami team we are use to seeing. Unfortunately for these two teams, but fortunately for the BCS, one of these two teams will see their title chances end as they meet on November 2nd with the loser probably dropping out of the Top 10.

Not In But Should Be: Tennessee
The Vols are on the outside looking in sitting at #11 with their only blemish coming from a one point loss to #6 Florida. They play in arguably the toughest conference in the nation, the SEC, where week in and week out almost any team is good enough to beat you. The team that they are nudged out of the Top 10 by is California whom they beat in week one 35-18 – go ahead and try to figure that one out. The Vols will need some help to make their way into title contention and road games at South Carolina and Arkansas plus a visit from LSU will not make it easy on Tennessee.

In But Maybe Too Far Down The List: Texas & California
These two teams might be playing the best football in the country right now minus Ohio St. but they each are already sitting with losses. Texas lost to the Buckeyes early on and will need to continue their torrid pace for a chance at a rematch – a Big 12 Title would certainly help. The Bears offense has put up points like no other the last four weeks and that should get them noticed but they really have only one chance and that would be a November 18th upset of #2 USC at the Coliseum. They have a decent shot but all we can say is good luck there! The lack of quality teams in the PAC 10 will also not help California’s cause.

Timing Is Everything: Ohio State & Michigan
Both teams should run the table until they meet in Columbus and the loser can probably kiss any BCS Bowl bid good-bye. The saying that a loss might not kill you but it better not come too late is very true. The Wolverines and Buckeyes meet November 18th and that will be too late for the loser of the game no matter how tight that loss may be.
